A rose that isn't a rose.

The Rose of Sharon is a Rolling Meadows Garden Center favorite.  It's an easy-to-grow, undemanding plant that loves to live in either full sun or partial shade.  It does well in moist, well-drained solid but is very tolerant of many growing conditions, including drought and pollution.  The Rose of Sharon is very hearty and there are actually very few pests that can bother the plant.   Wondering when to plant?  Right now is perfect in addition to the spring and fall.  The plant tends to leaf out somewhat late in the springtime, but sometimes takes is time and is slow to start in the growing season. The art of plant watering.

Watering plants is very important.  Believe it or not, it takes a bit more than just making sure you get the water in the planter to keep your plants and landscape happy. Here are a few tips to keep your garden well watered:  -  Focus on the root zone.   It's the roots, not the leaves that need the water.  Wetting anything but the roots is a waste of water and can promote the spread of disease.  -  Water only when needed .  Make sure to water only when necessary.  Reduce watering when rain is abundant.  Too much water can damage your plants.  -  Water deeply and thoroughly.  Lawns and annual roots are in the top 6" of soil.  For perennials,  shrubs and trees, it's the top 12".  It may take hours for water to go down 6 - 12"  Use your fingers to check for progress.  -  Water first thing in the morning.   Your plants will love you for this.  -  Mulch everything.   Mulch helps to reduce surface runoff and slows evaporation from the soil.  -  Get the righ

There is a fungus among us....be on the lookout.

There are quite a few fungal diseases that can impact your lawn and we want to ensure that you are armed to combat anything that might impact your lawn. The fungal diseases are usually pretty specialized, targeting specific lawn types, at certain times of the year and under certain conditions. Before jumping in and trying to treat your lawn, remember the first step is to identify the fungus itself so that you can treat effectively. All Fungicides aren't the same and some of the diseases can be easily solved by making small changes to your current lawn care plan. Knowing your grass type and recent weather conditions can make it easier to narrow down, but you may need help in figuring out exactly what’s going on. Your local cooperative extension center is your best resource for determining which diseases are most common in your area, or you can bring a small baggie of the infected grass to our Garden Center for help. We also have a full line of products to help with these summe
